◉  By Domani Spero

In July 2012, we posted about USCG Istanbul participating in the Bosphorus Swim. See US ConGen Istanbul in ’2 Continents 1 Race’ Bosphorus Swim and Look who else joined the American Team in the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim.

This year, Ambassador Francis Ricciardone and Consul General Scott Kilner once again joined the 25th Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim Competition. The competition started from Kanlıca on the Anatolian side and ended at Kuruçeşme on the European side of the Bosphorus. Ambassador Ricciardone was 30th runner up and Consul General Kilner was 25th runner up in their categories. 1426 swimmers from 55 countries swam at the competition.

USCG Istanbul: Evet, To Die For Çok Güzel!

In this 2010 video produced by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul, Consul General Scott Kilner and Jan Kilner gave an insight to their life, hobbies and interests in Istanbul (in Turkish).  Here is an FSO who did an assignment in Turkey as a junior officer, as a midlevel officer and now as a senior Foreign Service officer. One can certainly do a lot worse than that.  And the CG residence with the breathtaking view of the Bosphorus is — evet,  to die for ςok güzel!

A.B.D. İstanbul Başkonsolosu Scott Kilner ve eşi Jan Kilner bizi Arnavutköy’deki evlerinde ağırladı. Türkiye’ye ilk kez Şubat 1982’de atanan Scott Kilner, “A.B.D. Dışişleri Bakanlığı’nda Türkiye’deki üç görev yerinde de (İstanbul, Ankara, Adana) çalışmış olan tek diplomat benim” diyor.

Look who else joined the American Team in the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim

We previously blogged about the US Consulate General in Istanbul joining the Bosphorus Cross-continental Races over the weekend (see US ConGen Istanbul in ’2 Continents 1 Race’ Bosphorus Swim). Here are the swimmers crossing the Bosphorus!

Such a lovely day for a swim, too! You can’t be in Istanbul and not fall in love with the Bosphorus.

And you know who else showed up, not just to cheer for the consulate’s team but to join in the swim?

And yes, Consul General Scott Kilner did not just wear the shirt, he also did the race.

US ConGen Istanbul in ‘2 Continents 1 Race’ Bosphorus Swim

Tomorrow, July 15th thousands of swimmers will begin the race from one of the famous stops of the BosphorusKanlıca on the Asian side to Kurucesme on the European side for a 6.5kms race-course.

The Bosphorus Cross-continental Races are organized under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee.  When this event started in 1989, it was  apparently participated by 4 female and 64 male athletes but has since grown to become an important part of the Turkish sports tradition.

USCG Istanbul says that “For 24 years, thousands of athletes from around the world and Turkey have been getting together in Istanbul for friendship, to compete, to challenge and discover their limits. The pleasure of making swimming or rowing from Asia to Europe, to experience the exquisite beauties of the Bosphorusl and witnessing the passion of the fans all combine to create this unique event.”

The consulate’s presser says that U.S. Consulate General’s Swim Team will be attending this year’s ‘2 Continents 1 Race’ Bosphorus Swim.

Below is the consulate’s swim team:

Mark Spitz who won seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, an achievement only surpassed Michael Phelps who won eight golds at the 2008 Olympics will be attending the event.

You go, guys!

İyi şanslar!
